Inspiration
The moment of inspiration struck during a crucial research session. I had over 50 tabs open across four different windows—a chaotic mix of documentation, tutorial videos, GitHub repos, and news articles. I spent five minutes just trying to find the one tab I needed, feeling my focus shatter with every meaningless click. The browser, meant to be a tool for productivity, had become a source of anxiety. I realized that managing tabs wasn't just about closing them; it was about preserving mental energy. 'Smart Tab' was born from the need for a digital environment that proactively supports focus, turning browser chaos into a curated workspace. It is not just organizing tabs; it is restoring control to the user.
What it does
The Smart Tab Chrome extension transforms tab overload from a chaotic distraction into an organized, searchable knowledge base. It accomplishes this through a dual-panel interface: a Top Panel and an Intelligent Chat Agent. The Top Panel provides instant context by analyzing and generating concise summaries for all open tabs, allowing users to recall a tab's purpose without navigating away. The most unique feature is the Chat Agent, located in the Bottom Panel, which serves as a conversational retrieval system. Users can ask natural language questions about their current research or tasks, and the Smart Tab agent will analyze the content across all open tabs to recommend the single best-fit tab to answer the query, significantly reducing search time and enhancing workflow efficiency.
How we built it
The Smart Tab project was driven by a long-standing vision to overcome digital distraction, but the design had to be pragmatic due to the hackathon's constraints and the limited development time. To ensure feasibility, the project was split into two core components, leveraging the available built-in AI APIs.
The initial phase focused heavily on foundational engineering, dedicating significant time to mastering the complex Chrome Extension development flow and integrating with the provided AI APIs through several demos. The final implementation was anchored in this robust base: the Tab Panel was engineered to utilize the Summarizer API to provide instant context for every open tab, and the Chat Agent was built around the Prompt API for flexible user interaction. The most crucial engineering effort involved designing and refining the AI prompts themselves. This process was essential to guide the model's output, ensuring the Chat Agent consistently analyzes the content of all open tabs and returns the most relevant, "best fit" tab recommendation for any user query.
Challenges we ran into
- Architectural Integration The fundamental challenge was marrying two distinct and isolated technologies: the transient Chrome Service Worker (the extension's brain) with the external AI services (the chat logic).
Hurdle: Coordinating the asynchronous communication and data flow between numerous Content Scripts (running on web pages) and the Service Worker without hitting message size limits or running into service worker timeouts while waiting for slow AI responses.
- Content Preparation and Sanitization Before any analysis could occur, the project had to consistently deal with the messy reality of the live web page data.
Hurdle: Extracting clean, readable text from highly variable and cluttered web pages (using tools like Readability.js) while ensuring all extracted content was properly sanitized to prevent security vulnerabilities when handling HTML.
- Prompt Engineering for Retrieval The core "intelligence" of the chat agent required moving beyond simple question-answering.
Hurdle: Designing and iterating on AI prompts that could reliably force the Large Language Model to act as a router, analyzing a massive, context-rich input (the combined content of all open tabs) and returning a strict, non-conversational output format (the best-fit tab's ID) as the answer.
- Performance and Concurrency Managing the simultaneous and efficient processing of multiple tabs was a continuous technical bottleneck.
Hurdle: Efficiently initiating, tracking, and completing the process of extracting content from all open tabs concurrently without degrading the user's browsing experience or causing resource spikes.
