Inspiration

The idea for Smart Study came from observing how many parents struggle to help their children with studies due to busy schedules, lack of updated subject knowledge, or uncertainty about how to guide them effectively. While schools provide structured learning, children often need personalized attention at home to reinforce concepts. We wanted to create a tool that empowers parents to become confident, effective home tutors, even if they are not subject experts. With the rapid evolution of AI, we saw the opportunity to make home tutoring more accessible, personalized, and engaging for both parents and children.

What it does

Smart Study transforms any child’s syllabus into a personalized learning experience. Parents simply upload or enter their child’s syllabus topics, and our AI instantly generates:

  • Syllabus-based questions and quizzes tailored to the child’s grade and difficulty level.
  • Step-by-step explanations to ensure understanding.
  • Progress reports so parents can track improvement over time.
  • Adaptive learning suggestions to strengthen weak areas.

In short, it makes the parent a confident mentor at home — no more guesswork, no more generic questions from random sources.

How we built it

We built Smart Study with a focus on simplicity and accessibility:

  • Frontend: Developed using React for dynamic interactions, Tailwind CSS for a clean and responsive design, and JavaScript for logic handling.
  • AI Integration: Used a natural language processing API capable of understanding syllabus topics and generating context-aware questions.
  • Data Handling: Implemented local storage for offline support and minimal backend dependency.
  • Design: Created intuitive layouts and flows in Figma, ensuring that even first-time tech users can navigate without confusion.
  • Testing: Conducted small-scale trials with parents to fine-tune difficulty levels and user interface clarity.

Challenges we ran into

  • Syllabus alignment: AI often generated off-topic questions, requiring us to fine-tune prompts for syllabus accuracy.
  • Usability for all: Many parents using the app may not be tech-savvy, so we had to make the UI extremely intuitive.
  • Offline access: Building a solution that works even with limited internet connectivity was challenging but essential for accessibility.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Developed a tool that genuinely helps parents feel more confident in guiding their children.
  • Successfully implemented syllabus-specific question generation that saves hours of manual work.
  • Created a clean, distraction-free interface that both parents and children enjoy using.
  • Integrated offline support without compromising on performance.

What we learned

  • AI is incredibly powerful, but it requires precise instructions and guardrails to stay on-topic.
  • User feedback, especially from non-technical users, is more valuable than any assumption during design.
  • Building educational tools is about balancing accuracy, engagement, and ease of use.

What's next for Smart Study

  • Make the AI create better questions
Right now, the AI generates questions, but they’re not always at the level we want. The plan is to improve the way it works so the questions are more accurate, relevant, and match the learning goals. We’ll also add a way to adjust the “creativity” level so you can choose between straightforward textbook-style questions or more creative ones.

  • Add more ways to upload study material
We’ll introduce PDF uploads so you can share textbooks or notes directly. The system will also support really large text files — up to 100,000 words — so even full books can be used. We’ll also add a voice-to-text feature so you can simply speak the study material, and it will automatically turn it into text for the AI to work with.

  • Include more types of questions
We want to go beyond basic Q&A and add scenario-based questions, where real-life situations are turned into problems for the student to solve. This will make learning more practical and engaging.

  • Fine-tune and expand question options
You’ll be able to tweak the AI’s output — like making questions simpler, adding hints, or making them more challenging — with easy-to-use options.

In short, the next step is to make Smart Study more flexible, more accurate, and more helpful, while giving you better control over how the questions are created.
