Inspiration
Starting college life brings independent living and new financial responsibilities. Between hostel mess fees, daily commute expenses, books, and casual hangouts, tracking pocket money becomes a major challenge. We realized that many students run out of allowance before month-end simply because micro-expenses accumulate unnoticed without a proactive feedback system.
What it does
Smart Student Budget & Expense Analyzer is a proactive personal finance application built to help university students take control of their finances:
- Budget Initialization: Set a hard ceiling for monthly expenditures.
- Categorized Expense Logging: Track spendings under standard student categories (Food, Study, Travel, Personal).
- Proactive Threshold Alerts: Automatically issues a warning when 80% of the total budget is reached, and raises a critical alert if the budget is breached.
- Instant Analytics: Generates real-time summary reports showing total spending, remaining balance, and historical logs.
How we built it
The project is architected using Core Java adhering strictly to Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) concepts:
- Modular Design: Decoupled data representation (
Expenseentity class) from core business and threshold computation logic (BudgetTracker). - Dynamic In-Memory Collections: Leveraged Java's
ArrayListto manage dynamic lists of expense records without fixed-size limitations. - Console Interface: Built an interactive CLI workflow using Java
Scannerfor clean user interactions.
Challenges we ran into
- Handling Java Scanner input buffer transitions between numeric values and multiline strings without skipping prompts.
- Troubleshooting IDE workspace build path and compilation cache mismatches.
- Ensuring modular multi-class logic compiles cleanly in an open-source single deployment workflow.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Developing a zero-dependency, lightweight engine that runs instantly on any machine with Java.
- Implementing an active warning system that guides user behavior rather than serving as just a passive ledger.
What we learned
- Deeper mastery of Java OOP encapsulation, method decoupling, and Collections framework.
- Managing git workflows, drafting clean technical documentation, and open-source project staging on GitHub.
What's next for Smart Student Budget & Expense Analyzer
- Integrating local file persistence (
.csv/ JSON) to retain transaction history across sessions. - Adding weekly graphical analytics and a clean desktop GUI. ## What it does
