Inspiration

Many people want to manage their money better, but most either track expenses mentally or quit using finance apps because they feel complicated. Through real conversations, I realized the problem was not lack of tools, but lack of simplicity. That insight led to building Smart Spend, a platform focused on clarity, not complexity.

What it does

Smart Spend helps users track their daily spending and understand where their money goes. It provides simple expense tracking, clear categorization, and easy-to-read summaries so users can make better financial decisions without feeling overwhelmed.

How we built it

Smart Spend was built as a SaaS MVP with a user-first mindset. I focused on a clean interface, fast inputs, and meaningful summaries. The system is designed to be lightweight today, while remaining flexible enough to support smarter insights and AI-driven features in the future.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was avoiding feature overload. It was tempting to add advanced analytics early on, but that would have hurt usability. Deciding what to remove and keeping the product focused was the hardest but most important part of the build.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Shipping a functional SaaS MVP that solves a real problem. Building a product that people can use immediately without onboarding friction. Creating a strong foundation for future AI-powered financial insights.

What we learned

I learned how critical simplicity is in consumer finance products. This project also helped me improve my ability to scope an MVP, make better product decisions, and build with real user behavior in mind instead of assumptions.

What's next for Smart Spend

The next steps include smarter spending insights, goal-based planning, and AI-driven recommendations. I also plan to expand feedback-driven improvements and gradually introduce automation while keeping the experience simple and intuitive.
