Inspiration

We were inspired by the challenges many neurodiverse individuals, especially those living with Asperger’s Syndrome, face in social interactions, time management, and coping with sensory overload. We wanted to create a solution that empowers them to navigate daily life with confidence, independence, and ease.

What it does

Smart Social Companion is an AI-powered app that:

Suggests social conversation cues and interprets tone or facial expressions (optional AR/emoji guidance). Provides personalized reminders for schedules, appointments, and social events. Offers calming techniques and coping strategies during stressful situations. Encourages safe peer connection in a community-friendly space.

How we built it

Frontend: React.js for a web app (or Flutter for mobile). Backend: Node.js with Express, managing user data and AI interactions. AI/ML: OpenAI API for conversational guidance, optional emotion recognition for social cues. Database: MongoDB/Firebase for secure user data storage. Cloud: AWS for hosting and AI integrations.

Challenges we ran into

Designing features that are helpful without being overwhelming. Balancing real-time AI guidance with privacy and safety concerns. Integrating AI-based social cue interpretation in a user-friendly way.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Developed a working prototype demonstrating real-time reminders and social guidance. Created an intuitive interface tailored for neurodiverse users. Implemented AI-powered suggestions that adapt to user behavior.

What we learned

Accessibility and simplicity are key for apps serving neurodiverse users. AI can enhance social confidence, but thoughtful implementation is crucial. Testing with users is essential to understand real needs and improve UX.

What's next for Smart Social Companion for Neurodiverse Users

Integrate more advanced AI for emotion recognition and nuanced social guidance. Expand customization for sensory preferences and daily routines. Develop mobile versions with offline capabilities and multilingual support. Partner with neurodiverse communities for testing, feedback, and further impact.
