# Inspiration: I was inspired to create an innovative agribusiness due to prevailing food and self-sufficiency challenges in Ethiopia.
What it does: These facts initiated us to establish Haile Wako Integrated Farm in September 2016. The farm is certified in seeds production and supply for the local market in Ethiopia. The agribusiness is registered on the UN Global Market Place (UNGM) website, which has been linking seeds supply businesses with UN agencies like FAO since 2017.
How we built it: Born in the farming community, I have been passionate enough and keen to establish innovative agribusiness. This is a story of progress. It is story of hope, of transformation. Most importantly, it is story of all of us. And it is started by standing with the poor farmers. And this motivated me to become an entrepreneur, and hence Haile Wako Integrated Farm is realized as agribusiness and
is fully engaged in operation now in seed production & supply. Hello, This is Adugna Haile. I am one of the co-founders & CEO of Haile Wako Integrated Farm.
Challenges we ran into: There is a huge gap between seeds demand and supply. The seeds supply accounts for < 3% annually, compared to a much higher demand coming from farmers across Ethiopia. The seed supply shortage highly contributes to persistent food insecurity and undernourishment in the country. On average about 9 million people are suffering from food security challenges annually.
Accomplishments that we're proud of: Our agribusiness is engaged in climate-smart seed production & its supply system. We are working with 2,000+ small-holder farmers in Ethiopia to
produce seeds. As Africa's population grows and gets richer, the demand for food, especially high-value crops and livestock products, will continue to grow. Indeed, the rapidly rising demand for food within Africa provides the considerable untapped potential for intra-African trade. We are a registered company on the UN procurement platform to supply seed and we have been supplying seed since 2017 as our annual turnover has now reached $350,000 and our client farmers have currently reached 200,000 by 2022 as compared to the 15,000 farmers that we have been addressing in 2017. Our plan is to address 5 million farmers to supply our quality seed for East African markets by 2030. We have built a brand name called Haile Wako Integrated Farm and package seeds in quality bags with our logo. Our seed quality, purity, and germination rate are higher than the seed in the market due to our packaging and storage facilities
What we learned: To know and approach government rules and regulations & satisfy terms &
conditions strategically, gather updated information and prepare business plans, and search for information on how to get access to finance from varying sources to scale and meet our goals
What's next for Smart seed production and it's supply system: Additionally, we need to recruit senior professionals in the areas of plant science/agronomy and computer science background and automate and innovate our work more and address more people we are serving. We have also a great plan for addressing forcibly displaced people in remote areas via our seed supply.
