Inspiration

Most finance apps are geared towards adults, and since college students also have finances to deal with, we created an app that meets their financial and budgeting needs.

What it does

Smart Scholar Savings will take account of its user's earnings semesterly rather than monthly, and will subtract housing and dining expenses accordingly. Then, depending on how much the one might wish to save, if anything, it will inform the user of how much they can spend per semester and how much they are projected to save. Finally, our app asks for any additional/personal expenses, and returns how much money there's left. It can also send its user a warning if they have exceeded their budget.

How we built it

We used Java to construct the entirety of our code, including our working UI. The visuals of our application, with were created strictly for design purposes, were developed on Figma.

Challenges we ran into

Since this was our first hackathon, we didn't know what to expect in terms of time constraint and project complexity. We also didn't have enough time or knowledge to properly develop the front-end of our application.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We managed to develop the entirety of our code very fluidly and didn't run into many bugs. We're also proud of how we were able to develop a working button and minimal UI, even though it was all very foreign to us.

What we learned

This was our first time using Figma and designing an app, so we acquired design skills that will surely come in handy in the future. We also learned how to work with teammates with different skill levels, and how to come up with ideas while simultaneously working on our code, which helped us utilize what we already had if we chose to do something else rather than starting over completely.

What's next for Smart Scholar Savings

Eventually, we'd like to further develop the front-end into a workable UI app. We'd also like to run a survey to obtain feedback on features we can add to the app.
