Smart Public Health Monitoring System
Elevator Pitch
A low-cost IoT-powered health monitoring solution that uses wearable sensors and cloud dashboards to detect abnormal vital signs in real time, enabling faster interventions and proactive healthcare during public health crises.
Inspiration
The COVID-19 pandemic and other health crises revealed the need for fast, scalable public health monitoring. Manual checks are time-consuming and resource-intensive. We wanted to create a system that leverages IoT to automate real-time health data collection, enabling early detection and faster responses.
What it does
- Continuously monitors heart rate, body temperature, and oxygen levels
- Sends data to a cloud platform for real-time analysis
- Displays results on a user-friendly dashboard
- Generates automatic alerts to healthcare workers when abnormal readings are detected
How we built it
- Hardware: Arduino + biomedical sensors
- Connectivity: ESP32 modules with Wi-Fi + MQTT protocol
- Cloud: Central server for data storage & analysis
- Dashboard: Web-based interface for visualization
- Alerts: SMS/app notifications when thresholds are crossed
Challenges we ran into
- Maintaining sensor accuracy to avoid false alarms
- Handling network instability with retry mechanisms
- Ensuring data security with encryption and secure channels
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Fully functional end-to-end prototype integrating hardware, cloud, and frontend
- Live dashboard with real-time visualization
- Reliable alert system for urgent health events
- Feasible scalability at a low cost
What we learned
- IoT device integration and calibration
- Real-time data streaming with MQTT
- Cloud-based healthcare applications
- Balancing accuracy with usability
- Enhanced skills in embedded systems, cloud, and UI design
What's next
- Add AI-based predictive analytics for early health risk detection
- Expand sensor range for more health metrics
- Pilot the system in community healthcare environments
- Use blockchain for secure health data privacy
- Develop mobile apps for personal monitoring
