Inspiration
Students in hostels depend almost entirely on mess food, yet they rarely know the nutritional value of what they eat. Frequent complaints about unhealthy and repetitive meals inspired us to design a system that improves both transparency and nutrition awareness in campus dining.
What it does
Smart Mess Nutrition System helps institutes design nutrition-balanced mess menus and allows students to track their daily nutrition intake through a campus-integrated app. It combines menu planning, portion tracking, and fitness-based diet insights.
How we built it
We researched common mess systems in residential institutes, studied nutrition tracking platforms, and designed a model that integrates structured mess menus, standardized portion measurement, and a mobile tracking app.
Challenges we ran into
Designing a system that is accurate yet practical for large mess environments was challenging. We had to ensure the solution does not slow down food serving while still allowing students to track portions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a complete concept combining research, nutrition science, and technology that can improve campus food systems while remaining feasible for institutions to implement.
What we learned
We learned how food systems, nutrition data, and technology can be integrated to solve real-world problems and how research-driven thinking helps design practical and scalable solutions.
What's next for Smart Mess Nutrition System
Next steps include developing a working app prototype, testing the system in a pilot campus mess, and improving the model using real student feedback and nutrition data.
