Inspiration
Our vision to enhance the Humira Pen using an electronic chip in order to reduce losses from counterfeit drugs and increase patient well-being.
What it does
myHumira - Smart Humira Pen allows users to track their pen using a mobile app that tracks temperature and light intensities on top of having tracking capabilities using an RFID chip. This is beneficial for Abbvie as the added cost is heavily outweighed by the positives gained from curbing the counterfeit drug industry, in which nearly a $40 billion market exists. Not only will Abbvie save on costs in the long run, but they will be able to increase patient satisfaction by offering an app that tells the user if their pen has expired as well as a calendar telling the patient when it is time to inject their Humira.
How we built it
Using a Raspberry Pi and Python coding, we were able to create a database that grabs data from the Raspberry Pi and prints the data gathered from it onto the screen. This allows the user to see on the mobile interface whether or not their Humira pen is ready to use. At this point the user is able to upload their data to the cloud, where Abbvie can then run data analytics, using GPS and RFID tracking to gather patient data that can help Abbvie in refining this application as well as running more projects using the data.
Challenges we ran into
Minor roadblocks, how to present properly, communication errors that could have saved time if tended to.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Being able to accomplish this idea from start to finish and not have a major roadblock was very rewarding.
What we learned
Communication is key, sometimes you will have to put in some static images to make your demo flow!
What's next for SMART Humira Pen
What's next for myHumira - SMART Humira Pen is to implement the full calendar into the UI completely. From there, hopefully we can see this idea taken into the company as it has potential to impact people around the world and expand Abbvie's brand.
