Inspiration
Managing student housing, attendance compliance, and resource allocation across educational hostels is often fragmented, manual, and prone to delays. Traditional paper logs or disjointed systems fail to detect critical safety anomalies—such as unreported student absences—or track resource waste effectively. We were inspired to build a unified, intelligent software platform that brings real-time visibility, automated security checks, and data-driven insights to hostel management.
What it does
Smart Hostel is an all-in-one cloud platform designed to streamline hostel operations, enhance student safety, and optimize facility resources:
- Safety & Anomaly Detection: Automatically flags unaccounted student absences and provides risk scoring for non-resident visitors.
- Mess & Food Analytics: Tracks food consumption patterns, meal ratings, and wastage metrics to improve mess efficiency.
- Resource Monitoring: Delivers real-time utility insights (water, electricity, waste) to promote sustainability and cut operational costs.
- Visitor Verification: Digitalizes check-ins with ID verification and instant risk profiling.
How we built it
- Frontend: Developed a responsive, modern web portal with dynamic dashboards for hostel administrators and wardens.
- Backend: Built scalable RESTful APIs to manage real-time attendance logs, visitor data, and resource usage metrics.
- AI & Analytics Engine: Integrated anomaly detection algorithms to identify unusual absence patterns and risk-score visitor entries automatically.
Challenges we ran into
- Anomaly Accuracy: Fine-tuning the rules for attendance anomaly detection to avoid false alerts while accurately identifying genuine safety risks.
- Unified Dashboard UX: Designing a clear interface that presents complex data—from food wastage to visitor logs—without overwhelming administrative users.
