Inspiration
As a homeowner frustrated by the overwhelming smart home market, I saw friends and family struggle to find compatible products that fit their budgets and needs. I wanted to create a tool that takes the guesswork out of smart home setup—something intuitive for non-technical users, just like me.
What it does
SmartHome Setup is an AI-driven platform that guides users from a simple needs assessment to personalized product recommendations, step-by-step installation guides, and custom automation scene building. It verifies ecosystem compatibility and simplifies the entire smart home journey.
How we built it
We started by mapping user journeys for homeowners, renters, and upgraders, then designed a responsive UI with React. We integrated ecosystem APIs for real-time compatibility data, built an AI logic layer for recommendation algorithms, and used Node.js/AWS for backend processing and PDF generation.
Challenges we ran into
Syncing real-time compatibility data across 4 major ecosystems caused API latency issues; validating AI recommendation logic to stay within user budgets required iterative testing; ensuring mobile responsiveness for step-by-step install guides was tricky with annotated images.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built a tool that generates accurate, budget-aligned recommendations in 3 seconds; created a seamless drag-and-drop scene builder; and integrated affiliate tracking that’s transparent and user-friendly. Users complete the assessment in under 8 minutes—on target!
What we learned
We mastered ecosystem API integration nuances, learned to balance AI algorithm complexity with user speed, and discovered how critical visual cues (color-coded compatibility) are for non-technical users. Privacy compliance (GDPR/CCPA) became second nature in development.
What's next for This project
We plan to add premium AI consultations, expand the pre-built scene library, roll out exclusive device discounts, and build a native mobile app. We’ll also integrate more ecosystems and add voice assistant navigation for hands-free use.
