Inspiration

With rising electricity costs, underutilized rooftop solar power, and growing concerns around sustainability, we were inspired to build a system that empowers residential communities to become energy self-reliant. We saw the opportunity to decentralize energy distribution using technology, enabling residents to trade clean energy among themselves and reduce dependence on the traditional power grid.

What it does

Renewz is a localized peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading platform tailored for communities. It allows residents with rooftop solar panels to sell their surplus energy directly to their neighbors in real-time. Consumers benefit by buying clean energy at a lower cost than DISCOM rates, and producers earn better returns compared to government feed-in tariffs. The system is powered by smart meters, a user-friendly app, and blockchain that ensure fairness and efficiency.

How we built it

We used Bolt AI to accelerate development of the front-end and backend layers of our application. It allowed us to rapidly build clean UI components, trading dashboards, and user onboarding flows without spending weeks on boilerplate code.

Our trading logic is powered by blockchain technology, ensuring trustless and transparent energy transactions between residents. We deployed smart contracts on both the Polygon zkEVM Cardano testnet, enabling secure, low-cost, and scalable peer-to-peer transactions.

We introduced our own utility token called ENG Token (ENGT), which acts as the medium of exchange in our community energy market. Producers are rewarded in ENGT for selling surplus energy, and consumers use ENGT to purchase cheaper, green electricity.

Challenges we ran into

Regulatory Ambiguity: Navigating state-wise electricity regulations around private energy trading was complex and requires legal consultation. Community Buy-in: Educating residents and convincing them of the economic and environmental benefits took effort and trust-building.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Built a strong foundation for scalable P2P energy trading in urban India. Created a replicable model that could be adapted for EV charging, battery storage, and smart city grids.

What we learned

Simplicity in user experience is key—residents are more likely to adopt systems they understand and trust. Regulation is both a barrier and an opportunity—working with DISCOMs early increases long-term viability.

What's next for Renewz

Scale to more communities with tailored pricing models and solar optimization algorithms. Launch an EV charging marketplace using surplus community solar. Pursue partnerships with DISCOMs, solar EPCs, and IoT vendors to standardize and expand the solution nationally.
