Inspiration
Fruit quality checking is often done manually, which is time-consuming and unreliable. Shopkeepers sometimes sell spoiled fruits unknowingly, and customers lose trust. We wanted to create a smart, futuristic solution to make fruit quality detection automatic, fast, and trustworthy.
What it does
The Smart Fruit Basket uses sensors, cameras, and AI to analyze fruits placed inside it. It instantly displays or announces whether the fruit is “Good Fruit” or “Bad Fruit.” This ensures better quality control, saves time for shopkeepers, and guarantees freshness for customers.
How we built it
Integrated gas sensors to detect ethylene emission from ripening/rotting fruits.
Added an ESP32-CAM to capture fruit images for AI classification.
Used a load cell to measure abnormal weight loss.
Connected everything to an ESP32 microcontroller for processing.
Displayed results on an OLED/LCD screen and added a buzzer/voice output.
Built a prototype basket design with futuristic glowing accents.
Challenges we ran into
Calibrating sensors to accurately distinguish between fresh and rotten fruits.
Training AI models with diverse fruit datasets.
Ensuring real-time detection with low-cost hardware.
Designing a compact and aesthetically pleasing basket.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a working prototype that can detect fruit freshness.
Successfully integrated multiple sensors and AI into one compact system.
Designed a futuristic concept that could be scaled for markets and smart homes.
What we learned
Sensor calibration and data fusion techniques.
Edge AI deployment on ESP32 hardware.
Importance of combining hardware + software + design for user trust.
That innovation can come from solving everyday problems.
