Inspiration
The inspiration behind Smart Femm came from observing how menstrual health is still treated as a silent struggle rather than a science-backed, data-driven aspect of women’s wellness. Millions of women rely on disposable products that harm both their bodies and the planet producing over 200,000 tonnes of non-biodegradable waste annually. We wanted to create a solution that not only eliminates waste but also empowers women through technology.
What We Learned
Throughout the journey, we explored the intersection of healthtech, femtech, and sustainability, learning how sensors, AI, and IoT can combine to monitor biological patterns. We also studied medical standards for biocompatible materials, sterilization methods, and user data privacy. The most valuable lesson was understanding that true innovation happens when empathy meets engineering technology designed around real human needs.
How We Built It
The system is divided into two parts:
Hardware (Smart Menstrual Cup) – built using ESP32 for wireless connectivity, integrated temperature, pressure, and flow sensors, and equipped with UV-C LEDs for sterilization and TENS modules for pain relief.
Software (Smart Femm App) – developed as a cross-platform mobile app that connects to the device via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). It uses AI-based predictive models to track cycles, analyze trends, and provide personalized wellness insights.
We applied mathematical models to interpret biosensor data:
𝐹
𝑘 × 𝑃 × 𝑇 F=k×P×T
where 𝐹 F represents flow rate, 𝑃 P is the measured internal pressure, and 𝑇 T is temperature compensation.
Challenges Faced
Building a biomedical IoT device came with challenges ensuring data accuracy, user safety, and sterilization efficiency without increasing size or cost. Managing Bluetooth latency, designing a secure database, and achieving low-power operation were significant technical hurdles. Another major challenge was balancing comfort, sustainability, and reliability creating a product that women would actually trust and adopt.
