Inspiration
Farmers play a crucial role in our food supply, but many small and local farmers struggle to reach customers directly. Traditional supply chains often involve multiple intermediaries, which can reduce the farmer's profit while increasing the price paid by consumers.
We were inspired to build Smart Farmers Market – Soil to Table Network to create a digital marketplace that connects farmers and customers more directly. Our goal is to make selling agricultural products simpler for farmers and make fresh, trustworthy produce easier for customers to discover and purchase.
What We Built
Smart Farmers Market is an agriculture-focused online marketplace designed to connect farmers/growers directly with customers.
The platform provides a centralized environment where farmers can showcase their products and customers can discover and purchase fresh agricultural produce. The system also includes authentication, farmer verification, marketplace management, and role-based functionality.
Our main focus was to create a platform that is simple enough for farmers to use while still providing customers with a convenient and trustworthy shopping experience.

How We Built It
We approached the project as a complete web-based marketplace rather than just a static website. The system is organized around different user roles and workflows, allowing farmers, customers, and administrators to interact with the platform according to their responsibilities.
We focused on creating a clean and accessible user experience while implementing authentication, marketplace functionality, product management, verification, and order-related workflows.

What We Learned
Building Smart Farmers Market helped us understand how to design a real-world platform around multiple types of users rather than building features independently.
We learned about:
- Designing role-based application workflows
- Building authentication and OTP verification flows
- Creating marketplace and product-management functionality
- Designing user-friendly interfaces for different audiences
- Connecting frontend interfaces with backend functionality
- Thinking about trust and verification in online marketplaces
- Handling the challenges of building and deploying a complete web application
Challenges We Faced
One of our biggest challenges was designing a system that could satisfy the different requirements of farmers, customers, and administrators while keeping the experience simple.
We also had to think carefully about authentication, user verification, product management, marketplace workflows, and maintaining a consistent experience across different parts of the application.
Another challenge was turning the idea of a farmer-to-customer marketplace into a practical digital workflow that could work beyond a simple product listing website.

We want to continue improving Smart Farmers Market by adding more intelligent and scalable features, such as:
