Inspiration

In Rwanda, Umuganda plays a vital role in promoting community engagement, environment.

What it does

  • Citizens to check their attendance history, view fines, and make payments.
  • Local Leaders to create umuganda sessions, mark attendance, issue fines, and manage payments.
  • Sector Officials to monitor all sessions and generate attendance and fine reports across cells/villages. The system is accessible on both desktop and mobile, designed with simplicity. ## How we built it
  • Frontend: HTML, CSS (Flexbox/Grid), responsive UI designed in Figma
  • Backend: PHP (for form handling), or Java (optional alternative)
  • Database: MySQL – modeled and populated using phpMyAdmin
  • Version Control: Git + GitHub
  • Design Tools:Figma (for wireframes and high-fidelity prototypes) ## Challenges we ran into
  • Designing a clean, role-based dashboard that suits three user types
  • Ensuring data integrity across sessions, attendance, fines, and payments
  • Making the UI responsive and accessible on Laptop
  • Simulating real-world edge cases (e.g., missing payment records) ## Accomplishments that we're proud of
  • Built a working attendance and fine tracking system using real MySQL schema
  • Developed both low-fidelity wireframes and an interactive Figma prototype
  • Designed a role-based user interface that's intuitive and scalable
  • Implemented a solid database structure with foreign keys and constraints ## What we learned
  • The importance of user experience design (UX) before development
  • How to build a relational database with clean relationships and constraints
  • How to structure a modular web app for multiple user roles
  • GitHub collaboration and clean documentation practices ## What's next for Umuganda Attendance & Fines Tracking System (UATS
  • Add login and authentication (JWT or session-based)
  • Build a mobile version (PWA or Flutter)
  • Enable SMS/USSD reminders for Umuganda sessions
  • Include advanced reporting tools for sector leaders
  • Expand the system to other community services like Akagoroba k'ababyeyi
