Inspiration
Dyspnea is the most important cause of hospital admission in COVID19 patients . Early identification of this symptom has two potentially life-saving advantages. Firstly, control on the hospital or at home, which allows intensive care units to be freed up for more critical cases. Secondly, it facilitates admission in better health conditions for patients who require it.
What it does
SMART DYSPNEA is a system for evaluating the degree of dyspnea through the level of oxygen saturation. It is performed by an audio message of only 20 seconds, obtained with a mobile phone. It is based on Roth's test. This test is a robust test with predictive values of oxygen saturation with a 91% sensitivity.
How I built it
SMART DYSPNEA implements the Roth test with artificial intelligence and natural language processing algorithms. This system also allows the diagnosis and monitoring of people with other respiratory problems, such as asthma or COPD.
Challenges I ran into
Both are very high prevalence diseases in which dyspnea is a critical predictor. It has been developed by a team with solid experience in health, research, artificial intelligence, big data and data protection. SMART DYSPNEA will help thousands of people to prevent the severe consequences of respiratory problems, including those caused by COVID19.
What's next for Smart Dyspnea
we have a functional prototype pending the clinical validation tests that are already underway, and we need funding and a partner to implement it in an API and APP in order to start distributing it and integrating it into the systems needed.
