Smart Dustbin and Monitoring System for Waste Management

Our Idea

We have devised a smart dustbin , equipped with modern age sensors - to detect waste levels in them on real-time basis and send notifications to concerned authorities when they are full and are required to be emptied.
An application for the public, using which they can report wastes, track them and even win rewards for their participation in cleanliness activities.
Collaboration with municipal authorities for efficient waste collection, thereby leading to cleaner outdoors and easing their regular waste collection process.

How our solution addresses the problem of waste collection :

Smart dustbins automatically notify the authorities when required to be emptied .
Waste reporting by common people allows collection of wastes dumped in open spaces and those which remain unnoticed.

Abstract:

Waste Management is one of the most important agenda for any nation, particularly nations like India which are still in the developing phase . The very first step in the process of waste management is the process of waste collection For instance, India produces 26,000 metric tonnes of plastic waste daily, and 40% of it remains uncollected . This waste can pollute the soil, water, and marine ecosystem , and can also be ingested by animals ( Source - The Times of India ). Since this 40% of waste does not pass through the very first stage i.e. waste collection itself, it poses a great threat. Hence it becomes necessary for us to devise a solution to collect this 40% waste too. We have formulated an idea which includes the introduction of smart dustbins and connecting them to the municipal authorities via our software system i.e. an Android app. The Smartdustbins are equipped with various modern age cost effective sensors such as Ultrasonic sensors etc., which are able to detect the amount of wastes in the dustbins and notify the concerned authorities when they are full and require to be emptied. The bins automatically open when a person goes near them to throw waste, constantly send the data to our application. Besides this , we have also developed an application using Android , FireBase, Jetpack Compose, etc, to allow common people's participation in waste collection activities. A user can take pictures of wastes and report it on our app, track the waste until it is collected. Through our application the people may take part in various cleanliness drives taking place near them. For every reported waste the user gets coins virtually, which he can use to redeem rewards which may be gift coupons or physical entities. This would increase user engagement. With large public engagement and incorporating our system to the municipal authorities, we can generate revenue. Hence, our idea may bring about a huge change in the waste management system of not only India , but also other nations which require it.
