Inspiration
India has a large population that produces 62 million tonnes of waste each year. The biodegradable waste produced is approximately 62% The plastic waste produced is about 4% The non-biodegradable waste produced is approximately 34%
It is estimated that approximately 80% to 90% of municipal waste is disposed of in landfills without proper management practices and open burning, leading to air, water, and soil pollution. The citizens are not much aware of waste management-related issues, and their careless attitude toward their waste creates challenges for the environment.
Most people in our country aren't aware of the 3 different types of bins. They use one single bin to dispose of all kinds of waste. It becomes difficult to segregate and properly dispose of the waste.
We often see the person collecting garbage and segregating it with their bare hands. The person is prone to unhygienic conditions, sharp objects like blades, and glass. To overcome the problem of the segregation of waste properly, I have come up with the idea of a smart dustbin.
What it does
The smart dustbin is not your regular dustbin. It comprises: → Three in One dustbin. (Red-Plastic waste, Green-Recyclable waste, Blue-Wet waste) → Proper segregation of the different kinds of waste. → Automated opening and closing of the lid by detecting the person. → The design of the automatic garbage sorting tool will consist of: (1) Design of sorting wet waste (2) Design paper sorting (3) Design of plastic sorting.
How I built it
The dustbin is made using IoT technology. It is majorly made up of, Sensors(Infrared, Light, Hydrostatic pressure Level sensor) and an Arduino UNO microcontroller.
Challenges I ran into
Since all of this was unfamiliar, it took time to research about data, sensors to be used and learning about different technologies.
Accomplishments that I am proud of
I was able to come up with an idea for something useful for the environment.
