Inspiration

I was really inspired by online tools that helps improve an individual's quality of life, and then I also realized how little I knew about finances and how little my friends knew about finances, like most people in this upcoming generation don't even know how to write a check, and it doesn't help that I'm one of them. I feel like we're as a society growing disconnected from a lot of things we did in the past because of all the new technological advancements, and thats a good thing, but we also lack knowledge in how the technology does those calculations. So I wanted to make a tool that does indeed make people's lives easier but also, at the same time, educates them on what the tool is doing and why it is it doing it in a certain way. Like, why is it important that you invest 15% of your savings for your 401(k) plan and that meaning that goes behind that.

What it does

Smart Dime is designed for those in the Students and the working class who often don’t possess the time, energy, and resources needed to learn about financial literacy. The website easily and quickly creates a budget and investment plan that you would otherwise need time and financial knowledge to create. It also serves as a simulator of real life income and expenses.

How I built it

I used HTML, CSS, Javascript through Replit and also used a API from RapidAPI that scans recipts and prints out the total money spent on that recipt.

Challenges I ran into

I think my biggest challenge was learning to use an API, It was a huge struggle, but I managed to add one to scan receipts. Another struggle was also figuring out color palettes and symbols/pics to make the visuals of the website appealing so more people would feel motivated to use the financial literacy tool.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I'm really proud of creating this tool and how much it works and how it can actually be very useful for individuals, and how It can even help me and my friends plan out our finances.

What we learned

I learned the hard work that goes behind creating a financial calculator. I was also able to improve my coding skills in CSS and Javascript way more from this hands on experiences and struggling 10 times before properly implementing a feature. I also improved my own knowledge of financial literacy through all the research I did to develop the tool to do the calculations.

What's next for Smart Dime - AI Powered Financial Tool

I want to add another API for my chatbot, Now I have it manually programmed in the javascript to look for certain key words in the user's input and print out a response based on that, but there's also a lot of times where the chatbot can get confused, so I want to add an API that helps the bot interpret what the user is asking to enhance the user experience.
