About EduIQ: Data Intelligence Hub
Inspiration
Working with messy school datasets during my coursework, I constantly faced the frustration of incomplete student records, missing test scores, and inconsistent data formats. Traditional spreadsheet tools felt inadequate for handling complex educational data analysis. I wanted to create a platform that could intelligently clean data, provide meaningful visualizations, and help educators make data-driven decisions about student performance and admissions.
What it does
EduIQ: Data Intelligence Hub transforms raw CSV files into actionable educational insights through:
- Smart Missing Value Imputation: Uses both simple median filling and advanced iterative machine learning algorithms
- Interactive Data Visualization: Powered by Plotly for dynamic charts and Pygwalker for spreadsheet-style exploration
- AI-Powered Analysis: Leverages Gemini AI for natural language queries about your data
- Admission Prediction: Analyzes student performance patterns to forecast admission outcomes
- Real-time Data Cleaning: Automatically handles negative values, decimal rounding, and data type conversions
How we built it
- Frontend: Built with Streamlit for an intuitive web interface
- Data Processing: Used Pandas for core data manipulation and cleaning
- Visualization: Integrated Plotly for interactive charts and Pygwalker for Excel-like data exploration
- AI Integration: Connected Google's Gemini API for intelligent Q&A capabilities
- Imputation Engine: Developed custom algorithms using scikit-learn's IterativeImputer with intelligent preprocessing
- Architecture: Modular design with separate handlers for missing values, visualizations, and AI interactions
Challenges we ran into
- High Missing Data Percentages: Discovered that columns with >30% missing values produced unrealistic results with advanced imputation
- Negative Value Handling: Iterative imputation sometimes generated negative student scores, requiring intelligent clipping strategies
- Data Type Consistency: Managing mixed categorical and numerical data while preserving original formats
- UI/UX Integration: Seamlessly combining multiple powerful libraries (Streamlit, Plotly, Pygwalker) into one cohesive experience
- Performance Optimization: Ensuring fast processing even with large educational datasets
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully created a hybrid imputation system that uses different strategies based on data quality
- Integrated four major technologies (Streamlit, Plotly, Pygwalker, Gemini AI) into one seamless platform
- Built intelligent data validation that prevents unrealistic analysis results
- Developed a user-friendly interface that makes advanced data science accessible to educators
- Created comprehensive before/after comparison tools so users understand exactly what changes were made to their data
What we learned
- Data preprocessing is crucial: The quality of insights depends heavily on intelligent data cleaning strategies
- User feedback drives design: Simple warnings and progress indicators dramatically improve user experience
- Modular architecture matters: Separating concerns (imputation, visualization, AI) made debugging and feature addition much easier
- Domain knowledge is essential: Understanding educational data patterns helped create better imputation strategies
- Integration challenges: Each library has its own quirks - learning to make them work together smoothly was a valuable skill
What's next for EduIQ: Data Intelligence Hub
- Advanced Prediction Models: Implement machine learning models for graduation rate prediction and academic risk assessment
- Multi-file Analysis: Support for analyzing multiple CSV files simultaneously to track trends over time
- Custom Report Generation: Automated PDF report generation with key insights and visualizations
- School Dashboard Templates: Pre-built analysis templates for common educational metrics (enrollment, performance, demographics)
- Export Capabilities: Allow users to export cleaned datasets and visualizations for presentations
- Mobile Optimization: Responsive design for tablets and mobile devices used in educational settings
