Smart Cost Radar — Hacklytics 2026

🎬 Inspiration

Film and television productions lose millions of dollars every year to budget overruns — not because producers are careless, but because the tools they use to manage money are decades behind the technology they use to make movies. Spreadsheets, manual cost reports, and siloed systems make it nearly impossible to catch financial risk before it becomes a crisis.

We built Smart Cost Radar because the film industry deserves the same predictive financial intelligence that Wall Street has had for years. Productions of every scale — from independent films to major studio tentpoles — need a real-time, AI-powered way to see what's coming before it hits the bottom line.

🎯 What It Does

Smart Cost Radar is an AI-powered budget intelligence platform built specifically for film and television production. It gives production finance teams a single, unified dashboard to:

Real-Time Budget Tracking & Analytics — Monitor every dollar across departments in real time. No more waiting for weekly cost reports or manually reconciling spreadsheets. Budget vs. actuals are surfaced instantly, with visual breakdowns by department, episode, or production phase.

AI-Powered Budget Overrun Prediction — Our machine learning model analyzes spend velocity, historical production data, and department-level burn rates to predict overruns before they happen. Productions get early warnings — not post-mortems.

Risk Scoring & Alerts — Every project gets a live risk score. When spending patterns deviate from projected curves, Smart Cost Radar automatically surfaces alerts ranked by severity, so finance teams know exactly where to focus.

Multi-Studio Comparison — Compare financial performance across multiple productions or studios in a single view. Identify which projects are trending healthy and which need intervention.

Direct Integration with Movie Magic & GreenSlate — Smart Cost Radar connects directly with the industry's two most widely used cost management platforms — Movie Magic Budgeting and GreenSlate — eliminating manual data entry and ensuring the dashboard always reflects live production data.

🛠️ How We Built It

We started with a deep dive into the pain points of production accountants and line producers — the people who live inside Movie Magic and GreenSlate every day. From there, we designed the full product experience in Figma, building out a cinematic, premium dashboard UI that reflects the world of film production itself.

The design features a multi-step onboarding flow — Welcome → Sign In → Choose Your Studio → Select Your Project — each page immersively themed with production photography to reinforce the platform's film-industry identity.

On the intelligence side, we designed the architecture for an ML pipeline that ingests historical and real-time cost data from production accounting systems, trains on spend velocity patterns, and outputs overrun probability scores at the department and project level. The risk scoring model is built to be interpretable — finance teams can see why a flag was raised, not just that it was raised.

🧗 Challenges We Ran Into

The biggest challenge was bridging two worlds that don't usually talk to each other: the fintech data layer and the reality of how film productions actually track money. Production accounting is highly bespoke — every studio has its own chart of accounts, every production has custom cost codes, and data formats between Movie Magic and GreenSlate are inconsistent. Designing an abstraction layer that normalizes this data without losing the detail that matters to line producers was the hardest design and architecture problem we faced.

We also had to make hard decisions about what to surface versus what to hide. Production finance is complex, and dashboards can quickly become overwhelming. We went through multiple iterations to find the right balance of information density and clarity.

🏆 Accomplishments We're Proud Of

We're proud of building a product that feels like it belongs to the film industry — not just a generic fintech dashboard with a new logo. Every design decision, from the onboarding photography to the layout of the risk alert system, was made with the actual workflow of a production accountant in mind.

We're also proud of how far we pushed the predictive intelligence concept. The risk scoring architecture we designed goes beyond simple threshold alerts — it's built around trend detection, so productions get warnings early in a spend deviation curve, not after they've already exceeded budget.

📚 What We Learned

We learned that the film production finance space is massively underserved by modern technology. The tools exist — Movie Magic and GreenSlate are excellent at what they do — but there's no intelligence layer on top of them. Nobody is connecting the dots between historical production data and real-time spend signals to predict what's going to go wrong next week. That's the gap Smart Cost Radar fills.

We also learned how important domain authenticity is in product design. Users in specialized industries notice immediately when a product doesn't understand their world. Getting the language, the workflow, and the visual identity right makes a huge difference in whether a tool gets adopted or ignored.

🚀 What's Next for Smart Cost Radar

The roadmap for Smart Cost Radar is ambitious:

Full backend development — Moving from our current design prototype and architecture into a production-ready system with live Movie Magic and GreenSlate API integrations.

Expanded ML model training — Partnering with production companies to train the overrun prediction model on real historical budget data, improving accuracy across genres, production scales, and studio contexts.

Mobile app — Line producers and UPMs aren't always at a desk. A mobile companion app for on-set budget monitoring is a natural next step.

Scenario modeling — Let finance teams run "what if" simulations: what happens to the budget if the shoot goes two days over? What if weather forces a location move?

Industry-wide benchmarking — Anonymized aggregate data could let productions compare their spend efficiency against industry benchmarks for similar project types, giving finance teams meaningful context for their numbers.
