Smart Complaint System
About the Project
Inspiration
Every day, people encounter problems such as potholes, overflowing garbage bins, broken streetlights, water leaks, and damaged roads. Reporting these issues is often difficult because there is no simple platform that allows citizens to communicate directly with the responsible authorities. This inspired us to build the Smart Complaint System, a platform that makes reporting public issues quick, transparent, and easy.
What It Does
The Smart Complaint System enables users to:
- Report civic issues by uploading a photo.
- Share the issue location.
- Add a brief description of the problem.
- Track the complaint status from Pending to In Progress and finally Resolved.
- Receive updates whenever the complaint status changes.
The goal is to improve communication between citizens and authorities while helping communities become cleaner and safer.
How We Built It
The application was developed using a modern web technology stack:
- Frontend: React.js
- Backend: Flask (Python)
- Database: MySQL
- Maps & Location: Google Maps API / OpenStreetMap
- Image Upload: Cloud storage or local server
The frontend provides an intuitive interface for users to submit and monitor complaints, while the Flask backend manages authentication, complaint processing, and status updates. The database stores complaint details, user information, and progress history.
Challenges We Faced
During development, we encountered several challenges:
- Handling image uploads efficiently.
- Managing location data accurately.
- Designing a clean and user-friendly interface.
- Keeping complaint status synchronized between users and administrators.
- Ensuring the application remained responsive and scalable.
These challenges helped us improve our understanding of full-stack development and real-world application design.
What We Learned
This project strengthened our knowledge of:
- Full-stack web development.
- REST API development using Flask.
- Database design and CRUD operations.
- User authentication and authorization.
- File upload and location integration.
- Building technology focused on solving real-world problems.
Future Improvements
We plan to extend the project with additional features such as:
- AI-based automatic complaint categorization.
- Complaint priority prediction.
- Push notifications for status updates.
- Analytics dashboard for authorities.
- Mobile application support.
- Multilingual interface for better accessibility.
Conclusion
The Smart Complaint System is designed to make civic issue reporting simple, transparent, and effective. Instead of being just a demonstration project, it has the potential to be adopted by colleges, apartment communities, municipalities, and smart cities, creating a meaningful impact for real users.
