Smart Commuter

Inspiration

When we wake up every day, something that is on many of our minds is, how's my commute is going to be today? Will, there be a lot of traffic? Am I going to make it on time to my morning meeting? Will it rain? do I need to carry an umbrella?

Now, You can have all the information you need for your commute using Alexa. Introducing Smart Commuter! Smart commuter is a skill that was created with a vision to enhance your morning commute experience using Alexa.

What it does

Smart Commuter is a skill that we hope you come back to every day. When you open Smart Commuter it gives you the entire picture of how your commute is going to be that day. It displays a beautiful map of the the recommended route to take, the departure and arrival time and the time it would take to travel.

It also uses machine learning to suggest an alternate departure time if that could save your commute time. Weather at both the locations are also displayed prominently which is supplemented by great looking backgrounds to match the local weather.

Smart Commuter also allows to ride Uber and Lyft with just a tap of a button. Lyft and Uber QR codes are displayed in the second page of the skill and when you scan it using your Camera app, you have an option to open either the Lyft or Uber app with your starting and destination address autofilled, so you can ride with just a single tap.

How I built it

Here is our architecture diagram. We use Lyft, Uber and Google APIs.

Challenges I ran into

We wanted to design the best APL skill that looks great on all devices and that lead me to spend a lot of time making sure that the APL document looks great on devices of all screen sizes.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I have built a skill which I believe is extremely useful and will have users coming back to it everyday.
