Inspiration
Cities face thousands of everyday civic issues such as potholes, garbage overflow, damaged streetlights, and other public infrastructure problems. Citizens often struggle to report these issues and track what happens after submitting a complaint.
We wanted to build a simple digital platform that connects citizens and authorities and makes the complaint process more transparent, trackable, and organized.
What We Built
Smart City Complaint Management System allows citizens to register, submit, and track civic complaints using a unique complaint ID. Authorities can access an admin dashboard to view complaints, update their status and manage the progress of reported issues.
The system focuses on three simple steps:
Report → Track → Resolve
How We Built It
The application was developed as a web-based full-stack system using:
- Frontend: HTML, CSS, JavaScript
- Backend: Node.js, Express.js
- Database: MongoDB
- Authentication: JWT-based authentication
- API: REST APIs
- Deployment: Netlify and Render
Citizens can create an account, submit complaints with relevant details, and track their complaint status. Administrators can securely log in, view submitted complaints, and update their status and stages as they progress.
Challenges
One of the main challenges was designing a workflow that could handle complaints from submission to resolution while keeping the experience simple for both citizens and administrators.
We also worked through challenges related to authentication, API integration, database operations, CORS configuration, deployment, and connecting the frontend with the backend.
What We Learned
Through this project, we gained practical experience in building and deploying a complete web application. We learned how frontend and backend components communicate through REST APIs, how data is stored and managed using MongoDB, and how authentication and role-based access can be implemented.
More importantly, the project helped us understand how software can be designed around a real-world civic problem rather than simply building features.
Future Scope
We envision expanding the platform with AI-assisted complaint analysis, where an uploaded image could help identify the type and location of a civic issue and automatically generate a complaint description. Other potential improvements include location-based reporting, notifications, analytics, and better coordination between citizens and authorities.
