Inspiration
Choosing the right career path is challenging for many students and job seekers. They may not know which career matches their current skills or what additional skills they need to meet industry requirements. This inspired us to build a Smart Career Path Recommendation System with Industry Skill Gap Detection.
What It Does
Our system helps users explore suitable career paths based on their existing skills. It calculates career match scores, identifies missing skills, and classifies skill gaps into Knowledge Gaps, Practical Gaps, and Proficiency Gaps. It also provides learning roadmaps, progress tracking, and a dashboard to help users plan their career development.
How We Built It
We use Python, Flask, Pandas, SQLite, HTML, and CSS to develop the application. Flask handles backend operations, Pandas processes career and skill data, and SQLite stores user progress. The system compares users' skills with predefined career requirements to recommend suitable roles and identify skill gaps.
Challenges We Faced
One challenge was comparing users' existing skills with the requirements of different careers and presenting the results clearly. Another challenge was organizing missing skills into meaningful categories so users can better understand what they need to improve.
What We Learned
Through this project, we are gaining practical experience in Python programming, Flask web development, data processing, database integration, and full-stack application development. We are also learning how to turn skill assessment results into personalized career recommendations.
Future Improvements
- Expand the career database with more industry-relevant roles and skills.
- Improve recommendation accuracy using larger and updated datasets.
- Provide more personalized learning resources and roadmaps.
- Add detailed career-readiness analysis and additional progress insights.
Impact
Our goal is to make career planning easier by helping users understand their current skills, identify areas for improvement, and follow a structured learning path toward their desired careers.
