What Inspired Me A while ago, I came across a heartbreaking story: a Thalassemia patient couldn’t get blood on time — not because donors didn’t exist, but because the right donor didn’t get the right reminder at the right time. Many donors are willing — they just forget their next eligible date or aren’t notified when someone nearby is in urgent need.

That moment made me think — what if we had a smart system that not only reminds donors when they can donate again but also empowers them to act fast in emergencies and spreads awareness where it's most needed? That thought gave birth to RakthSetu — a bridge (Setu) between donors, Thalassemia patients, and awareness.

What I Learned This journey went far beyond just writing code. It helped me:

  • Design a life-impacting solution, not just a web app
  • Build for real user needs like timely alerts and donor engagement
  • Work across both frontend and backend using modern technologies
  • Respect data privacy, especially for health-related information
  • Plan and prioritize features effectively, especially within time limits

It also challenged me to think about how tech can build trust and save lives.

How I Built It Frontend React + Bootstrap for a clean, responsive UI: Donors can:

  • Register and log past donation dates
  • Track their next eligible donation date
  • Opt-in for emergency alerts
  • View Thalassemia awareness content
  • Earn badges and see their donor rank on a leaderboard

Backend:

  • Node.js + Express for server logic
  • SQLite used as the database
  • Eligibility calculation logic built using Python: next_eligible = last_donation + timedelta(days=90)
  • Clear API routes to handle donors, reminders, and emergency alerts

Unique Features

Thalassemia Awareness Section A dedicated space to educate users about Thalassemia, early detection, and regular blood needs — building empathy and encouraging consistent donations.

Emergency Donation Broadcast System Donors can opt-in to receive alerts when someone in their area needs urgent blood. Even if temporarily ineligible, they can share the alert with others.

Donor Leaderboard + Badges Gamification to encourage repeat donors! Earn badges and view rankings — promoting a helpful, active donor community.

Challenges I Faced

  • Prioritizing core features within the hackathon time limits
  • Keeping the system simple but meaningful
  • Ensuring privacy and respectful handling of donor data
  • Balancing awareness + action in one platform

Final Thoughts RakthSetu isn't just a project — it’s a mission. A mission to ensure no patient waits and no donor forgets.

In the future, features like a chatbot assistant, AI-based donor matching, and cloud database support (MySQL) can be added for scale.

This project helped me realize that even simple ideas, when built with empathy and tech, can create powerful impact. I hope to keep growing RakthSetu and collaborate with NGOs, hospitals, or health organizations to take it to the next level.
