Inspiration: Late fees are a small mistake with real costs. Many families juggle electricity, rent, school fees, and EMIs across different apps and paper slips, and one forgotten date means a penalty or a service cut. We wanted a reminder that works the way people already.

What it does: Smart Bill is a voice assistant for Alexa+ that tracks your bills. You say, “Add electricity bill, 1,500 rupees, due on the 20th,” and Alexa confirms it. It reminds you three days before, one day before, and on the due date. Saying “I paid it” stops the reminders, and “What’s due this week?

How we built it: We built the voice experience as an Alexa+ skill, with AWS Lambda running the logic and DynamoDB storing each bill’s name, amount, due date, and paid status. Amazon EventBridge triggers the scheduled reminders, and Amazon SNS sends a backup reminder to the user’s phone.

Challenges we ran into: Making voice input understand dates, amounts, and bill names naturally, such as “the 10th” or “every month”

Keeping Alexa’s replies short and clear so they don’t overwhelm the user Scheduling reminders reliably across different due dates

Accomplishments that we're proud of :

A working voice flow from adding a bill to marking it paid Reminders that arrive on time without the user checking an app A privacy-first design: Smart Bill never asks for bank details and never makes payments

What we learned: Good voice design means fewer words, clear confirmations, and forgiving input. We also learned how to combine event-driven AWS services into a simple, reliable product.

What's next for Smart Bill :

Hindi and regional language support Shared family reminders, so a spouse or parent gets alerts too Reading bill details from photo or SMS
