Inspiration The inspiration for the Smart Auction App came from observing the struggles of farmers and fishermen in rural areas who are often forced to sell their produce at low prices due to middlemen and lack of access to proper markets. We wanted to create a platform that empowers them with technology, giving them the ability to connect directly with buyers, set fair prices through live auctions, and improve their income and independence.

What it does Smart Auction App enables farmers and fishermen to list their products on a mobile-friendly platform where verified buyers can place real-time bids. The highest bidder gets to buy the product, ensuring fair pricing. The app supports regional languages, offline access via SMS, location-based matching, and secure, transparent transactions between sellers and buyers. It is a digital bridge between grassroots producers and the modern supply chain.

How we built it We developed the front-end using React Native for cross-platform support, making the app accessible on both Android and iOS. The back-end is powered by Node.js and Express, with MongoDB for scalable and flexible data storage. Firebase was used for authentication and real-time data updates during auctions. We also integrated OTP login and started work on SMS gateway support to help farmers without internet access. The UI/UX was designed to be minimal and language-inclusive.

Challenges we ran into One of the biggest challenges was designing an interface simple enough for rural users who may not be tech-savvy. We also faced difficulties integrating SMS-based functionality and ensuring real-time bidding worked reliably on low-bandwidth networks. Another challenge was building a secure and trusted system where both farmers and buyers could interact confidently.

Accomplishments that we're proud of We’re proud of building a working prototype that demonstrates real-time auctions, regional language support, and a seamless listing process for farmers. We’ve created a solution that doesn’t just look good but also solves a real-world problem that affects millions. The feedback we received from local farmers during our initial test was very positive, which was a big validation for our idea.

What we learned We learned how powerful technology can be when used to solve local and community-level problems. We gained experience in working with real-time systems, UI/UX design for rural users, and integrating features that are both user-friendly and scalable. We also learned the importance of empathy while building tech for people with limited digital exposure.

What's next for Smart Auction App for Farmers, Fishermen and Wholesale Deller Moving forward, we plan to expand the app's capabilities by adding UPI-based payment options, integrating with government schemes for farmer support, and partnering with local logistics providers for smoother delivery. We also aim to introduce AI-based price suggestions based on crop data, market trends, and location. Our goal is to pilot this app in selected rural regions and scale it with the support of agricultural cooperatives, NGOs, and the government.
