About the Project
The idea for this project was inspired by the growing need for accessible digital solutions along with increasing awareness of the environmental impact of web technologies. While many applications focus on accessibility, very few consider the carbon footprint generated by web-based systems.
In this project, we designed and developed a web-based assistive application that not only improves accessibility for users but also analyzes the digital carbon footprint generated by the application. The goal is to promote sustainable and inclusive computing.
What we learned
- Understanding of web accessibility principles
- Basics of carbon footprint estimation in digital systems
- Working with frontend and backend integration
- Importance of sustainable software development
- Team collaboration and project planning
How we built the project
The application was developed using modern web technologies. The frontend provides an intuitive interface for users, while the backend processes data and calculates the estimated carbon emissions based on usage patterns.
We implemented logic to:
- Track user interactions
- Estimate energy consumption
- Convert usage into carbon emission values
Challenges we faced
- Finding accurate methods to estimate digital carbon footprint
- Integrating accessibility features with performance optimization
- Maintaining a balance between functionality and sustainability
- Debugging and optimizing the system for better efficiency
Overall, this project highlights the importance of combining accessibility with environmental responsibility in modern web applications.
