Inspiration

In today's digital age, students often struggle to find focused, high-quality educational content without getting lost in endless algorithm recommendations and distractions. FocusTV AI was created to bridge this gap by providing a targeted, AI-guided study environment that delivers precise answers and relevant educational video resources instantly.

What it does

FocusTV AI acts as an intelligent study assistant. When a student enters a query: AI Query Processing: Uses Google's Gemini API to analyze the query and generate concise, easy-to-understand educational explanations tailored to students. Dynamic Content Search: Generates targeted search parameters to fetch precise, distraction-free educational video resources. Clean User Interface: Presents content in an intuitive, distraction-free web dashboard built for high-focus learning sessions.

How we built it

Backend: Built using Python and Flask to handle application routing, API integration, and request handling. AI Integration: Integrated Google Gemini API using google-genai SDK for intelligent response generation and query understanding. Database: Utilized SQLite (schema.sql and database.db) for lightweight data tracking and local persistence. Frontend: HTML, CSS, and dynamic templates (index.html) designed for a fast, modern visual presentation.

Challenges we ran into

Tight Deadline & Unplanned Hackathon Entry: We discovered this hackathon with less than 24 hours to go! Building an end-to-end full-stack application from scratch within a single day required intense focus, rapid prototyping, and non-stop debugging. Integrating the Gemini API: We needed an AI engine that could quickly understand student queries and return concise, accurate responses without slow latency. Choosing and wiring up Google's Gemini API on the Flask backend allowed us to handle dynamic query processing smoothly. Git & Secret Security under Pressure: Managing environment safety (preventing Gemini API key leaks on GitHub) while rapidly flattening repository file structures right before the submission deadline was an intense challenge, but we resolved it with clean environment management.

Shipped in Under 24 Hours: Successfully took FocusTV from an idea to a fully working, deployed web application in less than a single day. Seamless Gemini Integration: Seamlessly integrated Google Gemini API into a lightweight Flask backend to deliver rapid, accurate, and concise educational explanations. Clean & Secure Deployment: Built a responsive student interface while keeping backend API keys fully secured and maintaining a clean, production-ready codebase.

What we learned

Building under Extreme Time Constraints: How to prioritize core functionality, make quick architectural decisions, and ship a functional product in under 24 hours. Gemini API & Flask Integration: Gained deep hands-on experience connecting Gemini's modern Python SDK with a Flask web framework for real-time user requests. Version Control Discipline: Learned the crucial importance of managing Git trees, securing API keys, and keeping clean repository structures even when racing against the clock.

What's next for Focus TV

Smart Study Timers & Analytics: Incorporating built-in Pomodoro timers and learning analytics so students can track their study sessions and focus scores. User Accounts & Bookmarkable Notes: Allowing students to save key explanations, create custom study sets, and revisit saved video content anytime. Interactive Flashcard Generation: Leveraging Gemini to automatically generate revision flashcards from any study topic search. Multi-Language Learning Support: Expanding Gemini prompt processing to support multilingual queries for students around the world.
