Inspiration
The Smalltown Boy dance turns a duo into a playful, memorable moment. We wanted to make that experience accessible through photos, so people could bring their own pair into the dance without filming or editing a video.
What it does
Smalltown Boy AI turns two portraits or one duo photo into a 21-second dance video. Users upload their photos, generate the dance, then preview and download the result to share with friends or on social media.
The experience focuses on one recognizable dance, with a simple workflow from photo to finished clip.
How we built it
The web application uses TypeScript, React, and TanStack Start, with Tailwind CSS for the interface. Cloudflare Workers runs the application, Cloudflare D1 stores application data, and Cloudflare R2 stores media.
The generation workflow connects photo uploads, AI processing, task tracking, and video delivery in one place.
Challenges
Turning a photo into a dance video involves several steps that take time to complete. A key design challenge is keeping the experience clear throughout: helping users choose their photos, follow generation progress, and find their finished video.
Another challenge is keeping the product focused. Each part of the workflow needs to support the same goal: creating a personal dance clip with minimal effort.
What we learned
A focused creative tool can be easier to understand than a broad collection of generation options. Starting with a specific result gives users a clear reason to upload their photos and try the experience.
