Our Idea
smallskale is a mobile app that helps you create sustainable shopping habits and connects you with likeminded individuals. This platform also includes a podcast library that offers educational resources on fast fashion and ethical consumerism.
Our Inspiration
Our inspiration for this app came from the following HMW: “HMW help consumers understand at scale whether the way they're spending money is ethical?” We wanted to focus on fast fashion but initially created a brief user survey to gauge people’s understanding of the industry and refine our problem space. Through this survey we discovered that although most people were aware of the ethical issues of fast fashion, it varied on how often they tried to buy ethical products. There was also a variety of different resources people used to educate themselves or find ethical brands, this mostly included social media, friends and the internet. As a result, we built smallskale as a tool that will provide resources and encourage individuals to be mindful shoppers. By being able to track and share goals with a community, we believe it will encourage users to keep up with their sustainability progress.
Our Accomplishment
One accomplishment we’d like to highlight is being intentional with our designs. We made sure to test the high contrast ratio of the colors we used to ensure that all users could access and see them. We also made sure to reiterate through our designs to make sure the functionality of our app was intuitive, especially to an individual who would be using smallskale for the first time.
