Inspiration
We were inspired by simple pokemon games and its cute pixel art to as well as plants vs. zombies make a fun game about gardening and plants. We realized how much value plants add into our lives and wanted to educate people around the world about different plants through interactive and engaging gameplay. We want to change the way people see plants
What it does
We made a game where the player walks around in a green environment and places plants to help clear away pollution and increase the happiness of the villagers in the world. Placing plants also allows the player to explore new areas, all to demonstrate the positive effects of plants and gardening in the real world.
How we built it
We used python and pygame to make the code of our game. The game visuals were supplied using opengameart.org and using tilesets to build backgrounds in Canva.
Challenges we ran into
All of us are relatively inexperienced with python and all of us were using pygame for the first time, which meant we had to learn all of pygame's modules very quickly and understand how it worked before we could even start our game. Since this is our first hackathon, it was also difficult to distribute work properly due to our inexperience.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we were able to create a final product within the time period. While it is not the greatest achievement, for our first time working together in a hackathon, it was fun to give it a shot and just being able to learn concepts, apply those concepts, and then make a final product with those concepts within the span of a day was an accomplishment.
What we learned
We learned the basics of pygame and how to better coordinate our team during a hackathon. We learned that we need at least two people to focus solely on code, while just getting visuals and planning backgrounds require a lot of time and effort to complete.
What's next for Small Planting Journey
Next, we would like to polish our game a lot, like ensuring movement and getting the game to run more smoothly. Essentially, all of the fine tuning that wasn't necessary to complete the project we would like to add. As well, we might add more levels and areas to the game.
