Inspiration

Many people delay dental care because booking appointments, explaining symptoms, and submitting insurance claims take time and can feel stressful. SmAIly was inspired by busy people who want to save time, and by immigrants who may not yet feel confident handling these steps in English on their own.

What it does

SmAIly is a mobile app that helps users through the dental care process from start to finish. It scans teeth with a phone camera, provides AI-powered guidance, makes phone calls with Backboard.io stream agent to book dental appointments, and helps submit insurance claims with Gemini using the dentist's receipt.

How we built it

We built SmAIly as a mobile app with Expo Go for the frontend. We used Gemini for teeth scan analysis and form filling, Backboard.io with ElevenLabs for a streaming voice agent that can book appointments and keep memory, Google Calendar API for scheduling, Twilio for outbound phone calls, Flask for the backend server, and Playwright for browser-based form interaction. Challenges we ran into

One challenge was connecting several complex steps into one smooth experience. We also had to deal with voice-agent reliability, extracting the right information from dental receipts, and making the app simple enough for users who may not be comfortable with medical or insurance processes.

We built SmAIly as a mobile app with Expo Go for the frontend. We are proud to use a mix of Gemini, Backboard.io, and ElevenLabs for a streaming voice agent.

We learned how important it is to make AI systems practical, clear, and supportive.

What's next for SmAILy

Next, we want to improve scan accuracy, make the calling agent more natural and reliable, and support more insurance providers and claim formats. We also want to expand SmAIly into a more complete dental care companion with reminders and follow-ups
