Our app is Ollie—an interactive learning application that utilizes the authenticity and untamed imagination of children aged 12 and under. It aims to instill and foster creativity while providing a sense of direction in terms of possible career avenues through a fun and engaging platform. Unlike numerous educational apps curated for teenagers and adults, our app is tailored to address the lack of accessible learning tools and resources for younger children. Ollie recognizes potential pitfalls in learning from a young age, such as short attention spans. It is designed to create a fun, engaging learning environment while simplifying the teaching of complex subjects such as coding. Additionally, Ollie is so user-friendly that it can be used by children of all ages and abilities, including those who struggle grasping and learning difficult concepts. By making learning enjoyable and accessible, we aim to inspire children to explore their potential interests and passions from an early age.

When we first launch our app, a friendly sea otter named Ollie shows up. Ollie’s role is to become the user’s companion and provide emotional support with its adorable appearance and kind words to help the child’s learning journey feel special and personalized. In order to keep the children engaged, we have structured our learning to be similar to a storytelling game, encouraging children to “help” Ollie (the mascot for the app) rather than be forced to “study.” The questions are also introduced in a very easy way for children to visualize and understand in a meaningful way. For example, in our demo, we are trying to teach children the concept of assigning values to a word in Python. It can be a very easy concept for teenagers and older to grasp, but for our targeted audience, not so much. Some children who are visual learners might not be used to thinking conceptually, so we have visualized this concept by making a game that includes a scenario where the children have to “help” Ollie communicate with their friend by putting items in a box (basic concept of assigning variables). We also added a road map that directly shows how much progress the child has made. It was an important component we included to help children clearly see the progress they made yesterday and the future progress tomorrow. Although we have not included it in our demo due to limited time, we have also regarded an A.I. chatbot service for our mascot so that Ollie could provide the user with more personalized responses.
