Inspiration
The inspiration came from driving students at bus stops waiting to get to campus. As a stranger, I can't exactly offer anyone a ride, but I have room in my car, and we're all going to the same place. That's how SlugCruise was born!
What it does
It connects Riders and Drivers. The Drivers input their path, number of seats, departure time, and the riders get connected and walk to a stop along the driver's path, adding a stop to the driver's route.
How we built it
We built the frontend using React, Node, and Vite hosted on Vercel, with Supabase handling our PostgreSQL database and secure student authentication.
Challenges we ran into
We had a lot of trouble syncing with the database and then getting consistent results.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We feel we made something fun to use, and useful for the community at UCSC!
What we learned
Persistence, we started late, but here we are!
What's next for SlugCruise
A rating system for drivers and riders, a way of message without giving away personal user information. Persistent states for users between sessions and devices, and mid route real time tracking.
