Inspiration
We were inspired by UCSC students who posted their services and businesses across various social media platforms such as the UCSC Snapchat story and Instagram. As we viewed the Snapchat stories, we realized that these stories only lasted for 24 hours which limited their exposure. Less people are aware of these student-owned businesses since not everyone has Snapchat or Instagram. In addition, using multiple social media platforms would be difficult to manage and find student-owned businesses. That is why we created Slug Shop!
What it does
Slug Shop provides a platform to support student-owned businesses all in one place. Students can browse for businesses based on their interests by using filter options and also apply to feature their business on the website.
How we built it
We utilized HTML and CSS to build the website while using Github to collaborate with teammates. We also used design tools like Canva and Figma to design the logo and some other images.
Challenges we ran into
We were all fairly new to web development, so we frequently encountered issues along the way. In the beginning, we were unfamiliar with Github and how to access new versions of the project which took some time to get used to. One common issue was that some images didn’t display properly due to the image type randomly switching to an incompatible type.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We appreciate the website design that we came up with along with the Slug Shop application form. The filter feature was also one of the more complicated parts of the website that we were able to create.
What we learned
Along with learning more about HTML and CSS, we became more familiar with Github collaboration like committing changes, merging branches, pull requests, etc. We also learned about Github page hosting and how file directories work in the URL.
What's next for Slug Shop
We would like to implement AI to determine whether a student ID picture is legitimate. In addition, we would create a log-in and sign-up page with firebase.
