Inspiration
Coming into Santa Cruz, we spent a lot of our time on what our 4 year plan might look like. Especially in engineering majors that require a lot of classes, planning out what classes are needed seemed like a daunting task so we tried to create something to make it easy to visualize a 4 year academic plan.
Plan
We planned to create something that made it easier for students at UCSC to find classes and specific things they needed. We wanted to be able to show the user the specific course, course credits, whether it was a GE requirement, and a description of the class. It would be beneficial since students would be able to plan out their next years.
How
In order to do so, we tried and incorporated Javascript, HTML, CSS, Python and tried to do some web scraping off of the UCSC courses site. We tried to use Javascript and HTML/CSS for the frontend and used Python to do the web scraping. We planned to make the website theme as the colors of UCSC, yellow and blue, as well as have a background picture of some trees at UCSC.
Layout
We planned to give the user a search bar so they could input the course they were looking for. Once they were given the information, they would be able to put it in a specific box or quarter. They would be able to do it for all quarters. We also had the idea of having an area where there would be checkboxes next to all the required GE’s. The user would be able to put whether or not they have fulfilled the specific GE. We also wanted something similar with major requirements.
