Inspiration
Every scroll through social media makes it clearer: our information supply chain is breaking. Deep-fakes look real, headlines travel faster than they’re checked, and even honest creators drown in half-truths. Trooth was born to fight that fatigue—so anyone can click once and get a transparent, professional-grade fact-check.
What Trooth Does
- Claim ingestion – Paste or type any statement.
- Evidence hunt – Trooth searches the open web, news APIs, academic papers, and other data sets.
- Source scoring – Each source is ranked for reliability, expertise, conflicts of interest, recency, and independence.
- Verdict synthesis – Weighted evidence rolls up into a 0-100 credibility score with a plain-language explanation.
- Shareable proof card – Copy a link or embed the findings wherever you publish.
How We Built It
- React 18 + TypeScript + Vite for a fast, type-safe front end.
- Tailwind CSS with a custom Material Design 3 palette for styling.
- Supabase (PostgreSQL with Row-Level Security, Edge Functions, Auth, Realtime) as the back end.
- Perplexity AI API (llama-3.1-sonar-large-128k-online) for real-time fact verification and summarisation.
- Netlify handles builds, hosting, and continuous deployment.
- ESLint, Prettier, PostCSS and custom React hooks keep the codebase tidy.
- Browser fingerprinting, local-storage caching, and rate-limits protect the service.
Challenges We Hit
- Crafting a scoring rubric that balances nuance with readability.
- Keeping response times low while calling external AI and multiple data sources.
- Enforcing strict usage limits without hurting legitimate users.
- Designing a clean UX that makes complex evidence easy to scan.
What We Learned
- Users value seeing uncertainty—flagging unknown earns more trust than guessing.
- Quick, source-linked explanations beat long narratives for day-to-day fact-checks.
- Even small UI cues (highlighted quotes, bias tags) help readers orient themselves fast.
What’s Next
- Ship a Chrome extension so credibility scores appear directly on social feeds.
- Open an API for journalists and researchers who need batch checks.
- Add multilingual retrieval and translation to reach a global audience.
- Partner with media-literacy organisations to pilot Trooth in classrooms.
Trooth’s mission: make rigorous fact-checking instant, transparent, and accessible to everyone. Feedback and collaborators are more than welcome!
