Inspiration
The inspiration for Slice came from the increasing struggle many people face with digital distractions. We live in a world where apps are designed to grab our attention, often leading to decreased productivity. I wanted to create a tool that helps users take back control, allowing them to lock specific distracting apps, boost focus, and achieve a more mindful use of their time.
What it does
Slice allows users to select apps that they find distracting and lock them for set periods using Apple’s Screen Time API. The app helps users limit their screen time on selected apps and improve their focus, making it easier to achieve their goals—whether it’s studying, working, or simply enjoying more offline time.
How we built it
Slice is built on iOS using Swift/ SwiftUI and the Screen Time API to manage app restrictions. We integrated notifications to alert users when their time is up and a user-friendly interface that makes selecting and locking apps intuitive.
Challenges we ran into
One of the key challenges was integrating the Screen Time API, which required special Family Control Entitlements from Apple. This entitlement is essential for Slice to offer its core functionality. We're currently waiting for Apple’s approval to move forward with launching the app. Additionally, refining the UI for an optimal user experience and making the app intuitive for first-time users was another challenge we had to overcome.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of the clean and minimalistic design that helps users easily lock distracting apps. The app's ability to deliver on its core promise—to help users regain control of their time—is something we are excited about. Despite the technical hurdles, the demo version of Slice is already running well, and the feedback from early users has been promising!
What we learned
Developing Slice taught us a lot about the complexities of integrating with Apple’s Screen Time API and the necessary steps for obtaining the required entitlements. We also learned the importance of refining the user experience, making app functionality clear and straightforward from the first interaction. Building with the idea of maintaining user focus has influenced many design decisions.
What's next for Slice
Once we receive Apple’s approval for the Family Control Entitlements, we plan to launch Slice on the App Store. Post-launch, we aim to implement premium features, such as custom lock durations and Widget to check the Lock stats.
