Inspiration
It started with a cool idea, we were working on a movenet project when we stumbled upon this contest and built the idea for this game, and then decided to bring it to life, which was an amazing challenge full of hurdles and fun
What it does
You get to slice fruits, dodge bombs, and beat your own highscore (and ours) all with your hand movements
How we built it
It was built through utilizing movenet, google's open-source pose-estimator algorithm
Challenges we ran into
It was a crazy amount of work mapping movenet's coordinates of where it thinks the hands are onto pygame's map, as they have differnt axis. Even then it was super flickery and unplayable so had to make a trailing keypoint instead that follows where your hand is estimated to be instead of just showing where your hand is estimated to be, this really helped smooth it out, but it still isnt perfect. It took hours upon hours of coding, searching and researching, and lets not forget prompting ;)
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Building a working game out of just an idea, also those xbox buttons are cool :)
What we learned
Movenet has huuuuuuge potential in the gaming industry, this game has a lot of room for optimisation in terms of caching and loading assets and yet it still running rather smoothly considering it's running on my mid-tier system and the fact that movenet is being called to for inference on each of the 60 frames per second.
What's next for Slice Frenzy: Webcam Warrior
We loved working with movenet to create this game, we would love to work on much more games in the future, but we are full-time employed so we would appreciate a helping hand from anyone interested.
