Inspiration
Often, mental health services offered by health insurance aren’t effective or is a premium coverage which many can’t afford. We wanted to provide an affordable way for people to be in track with their mental health journeys.
What it does
MoodMed is a chatbot that conducts brief daily mental wellbeing surveys via SMS. These survey responses give psychiatrists data-driven reports, enabling them to provide more efficient and personalized mental health support.
How we built it
- Developed using VS Code as our primary coding environment.
- Integrated AI-driven conversation models, including OpenAI and Gemini AI, for engaging and dynamic survey experiences.
- Implemented OAuth 2.0 for secure authentication and user data management.
- Utilized Google APIs (e.g., Google Sheets, Gmail) to store responses and send automated notifications.
- Designed a database system to track user responses and generate data-driven mental health reports.
- Developed the SMS functionality using Twilio API to send and receive survey responses.
Challenges we ran into
some of the challenges we ran into included:
- Ensuring that survey questions don’t repeat too frequently.
- Handling a wide range of user responses effectively while maintaining meaningful engagement.
- Optimizing AI Responses – Balancing engaging, empathetic, and concise AI responses without making them too generic or robotic.
- Integrating Multiple APIs – Managing smooth integration between OpenAI, Gemini AI, and Google APIs while ensuring compatibility and efficiency.
- Maintaining User Engagement – Keeping users consistently engaged in daily surveys without making the process feel repetitive or overwhelming.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully Implementing AI-Driven Mental Health Surveys – Built an engaging chatbot that provides personalized mental well-being check-ins via SMS.
- Developing an Adaptive Questioning System – Designed a system that avoids repetitive questions while ensuring meaningful engagement.
What we learned
- Besides helping people with anxiety, depression, and managing their wellbeing, the AI is humorous as well.
"Are you locked in like a laser beam, or are you scattered like my ex's excuses?"
