Inspiration

I was inspired by reading about sleep apps developed by physicians to better serve the market. It got me thinking on how health apps, in the drive to put well-being into their customers' hands, sometimes forget that in this case, the doctor's feedback matters too. Thus, SleepTight was born, an app that still keeps the center of control with the user, but allows for meaningful feedback from a physician (maybe two!)

What it does

SleepTight has two types of users: A "User" and a "Doctor". Users will have a weekly repeating calendar that they can personalize with their own sleep plan, whether it be with notes to self, reminders, or soothing music. Users will be able to toggle between their calendar and their doctor's recommendation or "prescription" to compare plans. Doctors will have a list of patients they are linked to, and will be able to go into each patients "prescription" screen and edit it.

How we built it

I used SwiftUI and a bit of UIKit to create this iOS app's frontend, and used Firebase Realtime Database and Authentication services for the backend.

Challenges we ran into

I have never written a single line of swift code before, nor have I used Firebase, so this was a steep learning curve for me.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm proud that I could get so far in just 36 hours, given that I had no previous experience in iOS development.

What we learned

How to use Swift and Firebase.

What's next for SleepTight

Adding functionality:

  • A customizable "prescription" screen for users, and correctly configuring permissions in the backend so that only linked doctor accounts can edit those prescription screens
  • Adding features like an audio library with music and meditation files, expanding the sleep schedule planning tools to include pre-formatted sleep plans, sleep trackers, and push notifications
