Inspiration

We noticed that sleep is one of the most essential yet most overlooked parts of daily life. Many people struggle with poor posture, snoring, and restlessness, which leads to lower-quality rest and long-term health issues. We wanted to create something that doesn’t just track sleep, but actively improves it.

What it does

Sleeping Beauties combines wearable trackers, a posture-correcting mattress, and a visual analytics dashboard into one integrated solution.

The ring measures SpO₂ levels to monitor breathing and oxygen. The pendant detects snoring and other abnormal sleep sounds. The mattress adapts in real-time with soft columns under the surface, moulding itself to the user’s body and correcting posture for optimal sleep. The dashboard visualises data, offers personalised recommendations, and even provides reminders on caffeine intake and healthy habits.

How we built it

Hardware: prototypes for the wearables (ring + pendant) and a proof-of-concept mattress mechanism using pressure sensors and actuators.

Software: a visual dashboard that integrates the data streams, generates heatmaps of body pressure, and provides live posture mapping.

AI: We used generative AI + LLM predictions to suggest actuator adjustments for better posture and improved oxygen flow.

Challenges we ran into

  • Integrating multiple data sources (SpO₂, audio, and pressure mapping) into a single cohesive dashboard.
  • Designing columns that feel natural under a mattress instead of being mechanical or uncomfortable.
  • Balancing technical feasibility with consumer appeal. What sounds “cool” for engineers (pistons, servos) doesn’t always sound sleep-friendly for users.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Creating a holistic solution that doesn’t just monitor but also improves sleep.
  • Designing a working prototype concept that demonstrates posture correction in real-time.
  • Building an engaging dashboard experience that turns complex health data into intuitive visuals and actionable insights.

What we learned

Sleep problems are multi-dimensional; solving them requires a blend of hardware, software, and human-centered design. Usability and comfort matter just as much as accuracy in health tech.

How to leverage AI in practical ways, using predictive models to enhance real-world systems rather than just analyze data.

What's next for Sleeping Beauties

  • Miniaturising the hardware to make it more comfortable and consumer-ready.
  • Expanding the dashboard with long-term sleep trend analysis and personalised wellness recommendations.
  • Exploring integration with existing health apps (Apple Health, Fitbit, Oura, etc.) to create a seamless ecosystem.
  • Conducting real-world user testing to validate effectiveness and fine-tune comfort.
