Inspiration

All of us are the kind of people who will wake up to an alarm and then spend half an hour snoozing or just scrolling through our phones. Alarm clocks exist to try and bypass it, but we figured that the best way to combat that habit is to make it into a challenge against your friends

What it does

Sleep with the Homies is an alarm clock mobile app that doesn't stop until you solve a simple puzzle. The key point is that it lets you form groups with your friends and compete against them for points. Gamifying an alarm clock and adding a multiplayer motive to it is what helps Sleep with the Homies give you that extra nudge and get you out of bed on time, while you have fun doing it.

How we built it

MongoDB atlas database to store scores, users, leaderboards etc, and MongoDB stitch to allow CRUD calls. Calls made by a react native backend and frontend, along with the game itself in react.

Challenges we ran into

React native does not play well with doing anything outside the app itself, so creating an actual alarm was surprisingly difficult. Also incomplete documentation is a killer, document your code everyone :)

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating a fully functional MERN stack in 36 hours, despite the multiple issues we faced

What we learned

The fundamentals of fullstack and mobile development, first time any of us have touched mongoDB or used react native specifically for mobile.

What's next for Sleep with the Homies

Adding multiple puzzle games, allowing users to spend their points to impact the puzzles received (make them harder)
