Inspiration

I go to bed, and I am unable to fall asleep. Remembering many things that happened during the day and thinking about my presentation tomorrow. I am going over the discussion with my manager that made me upset. How can I sleep without a worry in the world?” This is a statement that may be heard by those with problems falling asleep. Sleep problems, whether in the form of medical disorders or related major stressors or depression, and a 24/7 lifestyle can affect adversely the quality of life. Common sleep disorders like insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can severely hurt daily functioning. It is believed that between 30% and 48% of older adults suffer from insomnia. Obstructive sleep apnea is also a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts and is often underdiagnosed in older people. 1 in 15 people presents with moderate to severe symptoms of this sleep disorder. Insomnia, depression, and OSA are highly correlated. 8 in 10 adults are actively trying to improve the quality of their sleep. Beyond this, undiagnosed sleep disorders or depression can affect every aspect of a human’s life. The inspiration behind this web application was to help to fall asleep quickly and improve sleep quality.

What it does

The Sleep Reboot app has two main features; one to diagnose potential disorders such as insomnia, OSA, and depression and one to help fall asleep quickly. This app detects the potential of having each disease by the scientifically approved screening questionnaires and consequently will notify them of the mentioned disorders’ levels and estimated risks. Therefore, they can have the opportunity of early treatment to prevent the worsening of the disease. Furthermore, people all around the world could end up struggling with sleep problems at some point over the course of their lives for any other reason. Sleep Reboot app will also provide a list of tips and information including yoga poses, calming music, reading, playing word game, and getting rid of any blue light to relieve stress and have a high quality of sleep.

How we built it

We developed a user-friendly, accessible, and affordable web application using Django for developing the back end and HTML5 for the front end. We also used the DALL·E AI system to generate and embed some of the website’s images.

Challenges we ran into

Accommodating all different aspects of common problems for falling asleep in a limited time was a major challenge that we ran into. As our team consists of students with various expertise and novel ideas, selecting the best topic to promote healthy living was so challenging.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Sleep Reboot app is a well-integrated design that could be so meaningful for almost all adult populations around the world. This program will improve sleep quality and therefore enhance the users’ productivity, energy, and concentration throughout the day. Our project can lead to increased awareness of sleep disorders and the importance of sleep quality. Our work includes developing accessible and cost-effective technology around the world. For example, this application can help people with low socioeconomic status who have a higher prevalence and incidence of sleep disorders, due to less access to healthcare resources, and higher levels of stress and anxiety due to everyday life challenges.

What we learned

Through our journey for Hack the Change 2022, we had the opportunity to develop our skills and gain valuable experience. Hackathon helped us expand our research and get closer to our ultimate goal which is improving the quality of life. We also learned how to prioritize and manage the time to conduct a high-quality project. This experience gave us a unique insight into how academia can be applied to the real world.

What's next for Sleep Reboot

As we further develop the sleep Reboot app, we aim to implement more surveys for other sleep problem detection that make it hard to fall asleep or stay asleep. We will also benefit from speech recording of the users to build an AI-based model to diagnose sleep disorders directly. More importantly, we will add an online chat box connected to a caregiver portal to get specific recommendations to get better sleep. We will add features to have a more visually appealing UI. In the next generations of this application sleep improvement programs will be built based on users’ goals.
