Inspiration
In today's world, there are many who neglect the need for sleep to do overnight work. This affects many of us by making us tired throughout the day and more susceptible to mental illness. Therefore my team decided to tackle this with the use of a sleep environment controller. The other inspiration to this project was a module we took called Wellness for life in Polytechnic. In this module we learnt of the importance of ample good quality sleep to both our physical and mental wellness. We learnt about how to achieve good quality sleep and that was the base information that helped us make this project.
What it does
The project uses the microbit to control the sleep environment and timing to ensure good quality of sleep. It uses buttons as simple inputs to make it user friendly. It has two modes, the day mode and sleep mode. When sleep mode is turned on it will set the alarm for 8 hours of sleep and also dim the light to recommended levels. It will also create soft white noise like whirring or whale sounds to sooth the mind and enables it to get good rest as well.
How we built it
We used the microbit block programming to create the code for the functions of the project. We used two crocodile clips with heads on both end to connect the microbit with a speaker output made by headphones and cone shaped recycled paper.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into some issues with creating the prototype with a functional speaker as we had no idea how to make a makeshift speaker so we had to research on making one and find out about turning our headphones into speakers.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of how we managed to use what we learnt in school about quality sleep and we are proud of how simple but effective this project is at making one's health better.
What we learned
We learnt about how to implement ideas into actual projects to find ways to improve peoples lives and take part in sustainability.
What's next for Green Lemniscate
We are looking forward to similar competitions to improve our problem solving with creative and computational thinking. We are from engineering course and aspiring to put our skills to build a sustainable tomorrow hence we look forward to using what we learn in out future careers.
