Inspiration

The Idea of creating an app built around improving sleep, came from my own perspective, as a student I often struggle with getting enough sleep due to things like school, homework, and screentime. which made me think, allowing me to come up with SleepApp

What It Does

SleepApp is built in order to improve sleeping quality, by combining various techniques for improving sleep such as, Breathing exercises, Calming sounds, and Personalized nightime routines. Another important feature I added to the app is making the app's experience feel gamified, so that users can stay consistent and motivated with their journey to create better sleeping habits.

How We Built It

SleepApp was built using Flutter and Dart.

I focused on making the app feel like an actual modern mobile app instead of just a basic school project. I wanted the design to have a calm nighttime feeling, with smooth animations, interactive screens, and simple navigation.

The app starts with onboarding where the user answers questions about their nighttime habits and preferences. SleepApp then uses that information to create a personalized routine.

I also wanted all of the features to connect together. For example, a user can set their bedtime, get a personalized routine, start the routine, complete breathing exercises or calming sounds, earn XP and Sleep Coins, and then see their progress update.

During development, I also used AI coding tools to help me write, explain, debug, and improve parts of the code.

Challenges We Ran Into

One of the biggest challenges I ran into was getting the calming sounds to work properly. Since audio is an important part of SleepApp, I wanted users to be able to choose a sound, play it, pause it, and use it for a certain amount of time during their nighttime routine. However, the audio did not always play correctly, which made it difficult to test and make the feature work the way I wanted it to. I had to spend time figuring out how the audio files were being connected to the app and how the controls and timers should work together.

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

I'm proud that I was able to turn a simple idea into an actual app with multiple features that connect together.

The main things I'm proud of are:

  • Creating personalized nighttime routines
  • Building an interactive bedtime clock
  • Creating guided breathing exercises
  • Adding calming sounds
  • Creating a connected XP and reward system
  • Adding levels, streaks, quests, and achievements
  • Making Sleep Coins actually useful
  • Designing the app around students
  • Making the app feel more interactive through animations

I'm also proud that the main focus of SleepApp is on building better habits instead of sleep tracking.

What We Learned

I learned that making an app isn't just about adding as many features as possible.

A feature can look cool, but if it doesn't actually help the main purpose of the app, then there isn't really a reason for it to be there.

I learned more about Flutter and Dart, UI and UX design, app development, personalization, gamification, animations, and making different features work together.

I also learned a lot from using AI while coding. AI helped me generate and understand code faster, but I still had to figure out how to actually use the code, fix errors, test things, and make everything work together.

Most importantly, I learned that the app needs to feel like one connected experience instead of a bunch of separate tools.

What's Next for SleepApp

There is still a lot I want to improve with SleepApp.

Some of the things I want to work on next are:

  • Making the personalized plans smarter
  • Improving the AI Sleep Coach
  • Adding more breathing exercises
  • Adding more calming sounds
  • Adding more animations and visual effects
  • Adding more achievements and challenges
  • Expanding the Sleep Coin shop
  • Adding more customization
  • Improving the reminder system
  • Testing the app with more students and getting feedback

My main goal is to make SleepApp feel like a real app that students would actually want to use every night, while making the experience simple, personalized, interactive, and rewarding.

SleepApp is a general wellness and habit-building app. It is not a medical device and does not diagnose, treat, or prevent medical conditions.
